Hi everyone, my name is Keya Turkiewicz!
I am working as a parent and community organizer for a charter school organization in Philadelphia. The organization operates schools in neighborhoods which the city often overlooks, serving almost entirely students of color below the poverty line. Providing these students with a quality education requires work beyond the classroom. School district policies, state education budgets, street safety, SNAP benefits, and special education funding all directly impact our students and families. My role is to build relationships with parents, codetermine the issues most urgent to them, and organize collective actions to shape those decisions. Lessons from GDS come to mind constantly -- meeting local leaders on their turf, analyzing power dynamics, recognizing development patterns, and of course, cultivating hope, joy, and action against steep odds.
